Happy New Year! January has arrived and a whole new year is ahead. This is traditionally a time for reflection on the past year, anticipation of the next, and making all kinds of resolutions—some of which might even be kept! Whether you’re in the habit of making New Year’s resolutions or mocking them, setting goals is always a good idea. In fact, if you’re looking for a resolution for this year, investing in your foot care is a good place to start.
Your feet are your foundation. When they are out of commission, it’s more than just painful; your independence can be compromised. Problems in the feet can even contribute to pain and weakness in other places, like the hips and back. The good news is that basic foot care at home is really easy to manage. You can easily add it into your daily hygiene routines:
Cleanliness – Keeping feet clean helps prevent infections, foot odor, and even some nail problems. Wash your feet in warm water every day, and pat them completely dry with a towel. Rub moisturizer into your skin and nails so they don’t dry out. Cut your nails straight across every few weeks. Use this time as an opportunity to check for problems, too.
Protection – The shoes you wear have a definite impact on your foot function and comfort. Wear supportive models with the right amount of cushioning to help your feet absorb shock. Always wear shower shoes in areas that are high risk for fungal infections, too.
Strength – Make sure you condition your feet to handle your activities. Repetitive pounding can take a toll and lead to injuries. Warm up before your activities and stretch your feet afterwards as well.
Prevention – If you develop foot pain, don’t ignore it! Stop whatever activities cause the pain and look into treating the condition before it gets worse.
Since your feet are such an important part of your life and overall health, don’t take them for granted. Good foot care now can help your lower limbs stay strong, comfortable, and functional for years to come!
