Sometimes something seems specific, but a closer inspection reveals much more detail to be discovered. You can say you live in New Haven, for example, but a local may want to know whether you’re from Dwight, The Hill, or Wooster Square. Heel pain is another example. It might seem like a centralized enough location, but the sources of your discomfort can vary.
The Achilles tendon is one area many people likely think of first when their heel begins to hurt. It’s certainly a candidate, but not always the go-to for a diagnosis. Here are some clues that can help indicate an Achilles tendon injury:
- Location, Location, Location – A condition such as Achilles tendinitis will tend to present pain behind the heel as opposed to beneath it. The back of the lower leg may hurt as well. If the pain is sudden and severe, or accompanied by a pop sensation, the tendon may be ruptured.
- Context – What had you been doing before the pain started? Were you running? Stair climbing? Engaging in any physical activity above your normal, comfortable limits? This is how Achilles injuries tend to occur.
- Stiffness and Tightness – Does your heel area feel stiff in the morning? Is your range of motion limited when flexing the foot? Do your calf muscles even feel tight? These can all be signs of undue stress on the tendon.
Regardless of the signs, however, you should never let persistent heel pain go without a look from an expert. If something is wrong with your Achilles tendon, it’s important to know exactly what it is and what the best treatment options may be.
