Summer is vacation season, and this 4th of July weekend many people are headed out to find places to beat the heat. Even if you plan to stay locally, you can find fun ways to stay cool. Milford has a couple of public pools available for swimming and relaxing. Of course, if you’re headed out to swim, make sure you consider your toes—especially if you hope to continue to show them off in sandals. Fungal nails and summer shoes do not mix well.
Fungus can fester in public places like pools, where the damp atmosphere provides the perfect environment for the problem-causing pathogens to multiply rapidly. Since most people walk around pool decks in bare feet, your toes are exposed to the fungus and significantly increase your odds of developing a nail infection. However, before you resign yourself to staying home and avoiding pools the rest of the season, know there are ways for you to protect your toes and keep them looking nice.
Always wear sandals or shower shoes when walking around the locker room or pool deck to avoid direct contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. Thoroughly wash and dry your toes every day, but especially after being at a “high-risk” location like a pool. Wear clean socks and use shoes that allow your feet to breathe so they don’t sweat too much. Keep your nails trimmed as well. You may want to pre-treat your toes and your shoes with anti-fungal sprays or powders.
Keep an eye on your nails this season. Fungal nails and summer don’t have to go hand-in-hand. These preventative measures can help cut your chances of developing an infection, but if you do develop a problem, you’ll want to catch it early.
