Will you have any New Year’s resolutions this year? If one of them is to boost your love for running, why not check out the Run Into the New Year 5K taking place on December 28th, 2013 in Danbury, CT? This race for all ages will take you through the historic downtown Main Street and is sure to jumpstart your running routine!
If you run on a regular basis, you may be familiar with some of the common pitfalls that happen to runners. Foot and ankle injuries in particular are seen on a regular basis in our podiatric office, due to the amount of stress put on feet during a run. Poor footwear, overuse, or a traumatic event can cause a myriad of injuries. Morton’s neuroma is one injury that can affect runners and it is typically due to overuse and wearing ill-fitting footwear.
While you run, are you experiencing a sharp pain in the ball of your foot? You may also feel burning, tingling, and numbness, or feel as if something is inside the ball of your foot. These are characteristic symptoms of Morton’s neuroma. They are all due to the thickening of a nerve between the third and fourth toes. Take action right away, because ignoring or pushing through this type of pain may cause you to be sidelined indefinitely.
We encourage you to start with a period of rest to alleviate pressure on your foot. Second, make a change of footwear to a pair that has a wide toe box, and third, use icing to help reduce swelling. Finally, we can provide a pair of custom orthotic inserts that will reduce your pain by properly supporting your feet. If pain remains after these conservative treatments, we can discuss whether surgery may be necessary.
Don’t allow pain in the ball of your foot to interfere with your running longer than it needs to. Contact Dr. Sanjay Patel at Family Foot Care & Surgery for treatment and diagnosis. Call us in Milford, CT at (203) 876-7736 or in Hamden, CT at (203) 288-4055.
