Recovery From Extensor Tendonitis

Comments (0)

Have you ever worked on something that didn’t turn out well? Sometimes failures come when we don’t take the time to do things right the first time. A finished product may not be up to standards if the full effort wasn’t put in from the start.

A foot injury can fall into the same category, as the wrong treatment could result in compromised healing and long-term consequences. Extensor tendonitis is one particular injury that needs treatment done right the first time. The extensor muscles are found below the knee and run down the front of the leg. The tendons of these muscles cross the ankle and insert in the toes and are used to bring the toes up to the shin.

When these tendons become injured, it results in a condition called extensor tendonitis. Overuse or over exertion during exercise is the most common cause of this injury, although tight calf muscles and flat feet are also risk factors. Activities that put repeated strain on this area of the leg and foot can cause the tendons to become irritated and inflamed. A common symptom would be pain across the top of your foot.

Recovery from this type of injury usually starts with a good deal of rest. It is best to avoid all activities that would further aggravate the area. Icing and anti-inflammatory medicines can help with swelling. Stretching and strengthening exercises are typically recommended and massage can play an important role in healing the inflamed tendons.

If you have pain across the top of your foot or suspect this injury, please don’t wait to seek treatment. Contact Dr. Sanjay Patel at Family Foot Care & Surgery for help. Make an appointment at our office in Hamden, CT by calling (203) 288-4055 or in Milford, CT by calling (203) 876-7736.
